Multi-Day Heat Warning Lifted in Waterloo Region Amid Fire Ban
URGENT UPDATE: The multi-day heat warning that gripped Waterloo Region and much of Southern Ontario has officially ended as of early this morning, August 13, 2023. Issued by Environment Canada on August 8, this warning brought relentless heat, pushing daytime temperatures into the mid-30s and humidex values soaring to a sweltering 40C.
Throughout this heatwave, residents faced extreme conditions, with temperatures exceeding 30C on ten separate occasions this July, significantly above the 30-year average of just four days. For context, last year, there were only two days in July where temperatures climbed above 30C.
Despite the lifting of the heat warning, a temporary fire ban remains in force across the region. As of 4:00 p.m. on August 8, backyard fires and open burns are prohibited in Kitchener and Cambridge. Residents in Waterloo are also reminded that backyard fires are not permitted, and local townships have collectively imposed a ban on open-air burning. Violating these restrictions could lead to fines and legal charges.
Residents are strongly advised to stay vigilant as dry conditions persist, raising concerns about potential forest fires. The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has urged caution, particularly regarding water safety, as reports of a suspected blue-green algae bloom at Conestogo Lake have surfaced, further complicating outdoor activities.
As communities recover from this heatwave, officials continue to monitor conditions closely. Stay tuned for updates on weather forecasts and fire safety advisories in the coming days.
This urgent situation highlights the need for continued awareness and caution as summer weather patterns evolve. Share this update with friends and family to keep everyone informed and safe during these extreme conditions.
