Edmonton Hospitals Adopt Rapid Blood Clot Removal Procedure

UPDATE: A revolutionary, minimally invasive procedure for rapid blood clot removal is now standard at three hospitals in Edmonton, transforming patient care. Introduced in March 2023, this advanced technique utilizes continuous X-ray imaging to precisely navigate a catheter through the body, targeting clots in the lungs.

This game-changing procedure is currently implemented at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, University of Alberta Hospital, and Stollery Children’s Hospital, with an additional facility at the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre. Patients undergoing this treatment benefit from mild sedation during a procedure that typically lasts just one to two hours.

The impact of this new procedure is vividly illustrated by the experience of David Batke, a 59-year-old business owner from Edmonton. After undergoing back surgery late last year, Batke faced a life-threatening situation when he developed a pulmonary embolism—a dangerous blood clot that traveled to his lungs. Upon arriving at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, doctors presented him with two options: traditional open-heart surgery or the newly adopted minimally invasive procedure.

“I chose the latter,” Batke recounted during a media event at the hospital hosted by Alberta Health Services. “They got me into this procedure within a few hours, and within a couple of hours, they were done.” Remarkably, he experienced immediate improvement. “I was awake for the whole thing—I heard everything and experienced it all. Within hours after the procedure, I was feeling significantly better.”

Batke’s recovery was swift. He transitioned from the intensive care unit to a regular hospital bed within hours and was discharged just two days later, symptom-free. Reflecting on the procedure’s impact on his life, he emphasized, “If I had gone the open-heart surgery route, I might have been off work for months. This procedure is truly a game-changer.”

Now, nine months later, he reports being back to normal and fully engaged with life, stating, “I was back to work and back to regular life within a week.”

As Edmonton’s healthcare facilities continue to adopt this innovative technique, the benefits are clear: faster recovery times, reduced hospital stays, and improved patient outcomes. This urgent advancement in medical procedures is not only saving lives but also enhancing the quality of life for many patients, making it essential news for those following healthcare developments.

Stay tuned for more updates on this critical healthcare innovation as it evolves and spreads across other regions.
