Man’s Gold Chain Stolen in Urgent Distraction Theft in Mississauga

UPDATE: A shocking distraction theft unfolded in a Mississauga, Ontario, parking lot, leaving a senior devastated after losing a sentimental gold chain valued at approximately $10,000. The incident, reported to have occurred in July 2023, highlights a troubling trend of distraction thefts targeting vulnerable individuals.
Vijaya Vikrant, the victim, recounted the harrowing experience to CTV News. He was approached by a woman who claimed she was celebrating a birthday by giving away jewelry. “She said, ‘I’m giving you this for free,’” Vikrant explained. In a swift motion, she draped a chain around his neck and secured it, only for him to later discover that his precious gold chain, handed down from his father and cherished for 60 to 70 years, had been stolen.
“It happened so fast, I could not believe myself,” Vikrant added, expressing his dismay at losing something so invaluable. The chain he received in exchange was nothing but cheap plastic, reminiscent of dollar store merchandise.
Authorities confirm that distraction thefts have surged, particularly in the summer months when people are more active outdoors. York Regional Police (YRP) are taking these incidents seriously, with recent cases including a disturbing event where a 78-year-old woman was injured during a similar theft attempt. “The suspect gets back into the vehicle, and the woman looks down and sees she basically has this junk jewelry left behind,” said YRP Constable Lisa Moskaluk.
Officials warn that many of these distraction thefts are linked to organized crime rings, with criminals often not being Canadian citizens. “Unfortunately, a lot of the people we arrest are not Canadian citizens or have not arrived here lawfully,” Moskaluk stated, stressing the importance of vigilance.
Distraction thefts are not only occurring in parking lots but also at post office boxes and outside retirement homes. Vikrant now feels compelled to warn others. “Be careful if someone comes up to you and tries to give you something. I feel really bad,” he said, lamenting his lost heirloom that he had hoped to pass down to his son.
As police continue their investigations, residents are urged to remain alert and cautious when approached by strangers in public spaces. The impact of such crimes extends beyond the loss of property, affecting the emotional well-being of victims like Vikrant.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing trend of distraction thefts in communities. Stay informed and prioritize safety in your surroundings.
