Forreston Cardinals Gear Up for Comeback Season After Setbacks
UPDATE: The Forreston Cardinals are poised for a major comeback this fall after a challenging season that ended with a 2-7 record, marking their first missed playoff appearance since 2009. With a wealth of experience gained from last year’s struggles, the team believes they are ready to reclaim their competitive edge.
Head Coach Keynon Janicke emphasized the importance of last season’s growing pains. “We were real young last year… that leads to things like guys being on the field maybe when it’s too soon or too early,” he explained. However, the team has rallied, returning 10 starters on offense and 8 starters on defense, transforming inexperience into a seasoned unit.
Tight end/defensive lineman Hunter DeWall, the only all-conference player last season, noted the significance of player maturity. “Last year, the problem was our team was really young… this year they’re all maturing,” he stated. The Cardinals are not only gaining valuable experience but also a hunger for success after a tough year.
“A lot of these guys are ready to step up,” Janicke declared. The off-season has seen the players dedicated to training, with many in the weight room since November 2022. “I haven’t had to do a lot of motivating for that,” he added, highlighting the leadership among upperclassmen.
The Cardinals, with a rich history of three state titles and multiple semifinal appearances since 2011, are fully aware of the legacy they are working to uphold. DeWall emphasized the need for a return to physical play, stating, “We just have to be physical. Last year, a lot of people on our team were afraid to hit, and that cost us several games.” The focus this season is on finishing drives and tackling effectively.
Forreston’s coaching staff recognizes that improvements are essential. Janicke pointed out that last year’s inability to maintain leads in several games was a critical issue. “If we clean ourselves up, if we fix what we need to fix, the wins will come,” he assured. The team is committed to making necessary adjustments both offensively and defensively.
As the season approaches, the Cardinals are determined to learn from past mistakes and emerge stronger. The combination of returning players, experienced leadership, and a renewed commitment to hard work sets the stage for a promising season ahead.
Fans can expect to see a different Forreston team this fall, one that is ready to compete fiercely and reclaim its place among the top teams. The countdown to a revitalized season is on, and the Cardinals are eager to make their mark.
