UPDATE: The RCMP has launched an urgent appeal for public assistance to identify a man they believe deliberately set fire to a Nova Scotia Power station in Fall River, N.S., on Wednesday. The incident occurred at approximately 3:48 p.m. AT, prompting immediate response from first responders who extinguished the blaze quickly.

Authorities report that the suspect used a torch to ignite several spools of wire, and another similar fire was reported in the vicinity shortly before the power station incident. The potential for such fires in the densely populated area of Fall River poses a serious threat to the community’s safety.

“The prospect of having a fire in the heavily populated area of Fall River would be devastating to our community, so please help police solve this crime,” said a statement from Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.

This alarming incident comes at a time when Nova Scotia is facing dry conditions and ongoing wildfires. A provincewide ban on open fires is currently enforced, alongside restrictions on entering wooded areas. Fire crews are actively battling blazes in multiple regions, including Annapolis County, where evacuations have already taken place.

Another wildfire near the Bayers Lake Business Park in Halifax prompted evacuations but is currently contained, minimizing the risk of further spread. The situation underscores the urgency for community vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement.

RCMP urges anyone with information regarding the Fall River arson to contact the Lower Sackville RCMP or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers. Surveillance images of the suspect have been obtained, and authorities are hopeful that the public can assist in bringing this individual to justice.

As the province continues to grapple with wildfires, the importance of community safety and proactive measures cannot be overstated. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
