Quarterback Anthony Lio Aims for Success as Queen’s Opener Approaches

As the Queen’s Gaels prepare for their opening game against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on August 23, 2025, quarterback Anthony Lio is focused on building momentum from a promising second season. Lio, entering his third year with the team, is in a competitive situation alongside fellow quarterback Alex Vreeken, who has faced injury challenges in recent years.
The dilemma of having two quarterbacks vying for the starting position can often lead to uncertainty. Vreeken, who previously held the starting role for three seasons, has been hindered by injuries, participating in just five games last season, following a similar pattern the year before. His impressive stature at 6-feet-4 and 210 pounds positions him as a traditional quarterback prototype, yet his limited availability raises questions about his impact on the field.
Lio’s Emerging Performance
In contrast, Lio has made significant strides in his gameplay. Last season, he demonstrated his potential by completing 63 percent of his passes, throwing for seven touchdowns and only one interception over ten games. His ability to lead the team to a 22-19 playoff victory against Windsor marked a high point in a season plagued by injuries. The following week, he nearly threw for 300 yards in a narrow loss to Laurier, showcasing his growth and adaptability.
During recent practices, Lio exhibited confidence and precision that belied the late summer timing. At 5-feet-9, he contrasts sharply with Vreeken but brings a unique style to the quarterback position. His background as a two-sport athlete at St. Andrew’s School, where his father Marcello Lio coaches, has equipped him with valuable experience in high-pressure situations.
“Playing at St. Andrew’s was an advantage and 100 percent helped me transition to the team here,” Lio stated after practice. His father’s extensive coaching background, which includes roles as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at York University, has also played a crucial role in Lio’s development. Marcello emphasized the importance of understanding the game from a young age, saying, “He was always safe and comfortable around the teams I coached.”
Preparing for the Season Ahead
As the Gaels finalize their roster ahead of the season opener, the coaching staff’s strategy regarding Lio and Vreeken remains unclear. Head coach Steven Snyder has not revealed who will be starting against Western, but both quarterbacks are prepared for the challenge. Lio acknowledged the significance of the match, stating, “Everyone on this team has had the game circled on a calendar. We know that to have a big season, it starts there.”
Reflecting on his previous encounter with the Mustangs, where the Gaels suffered a 39-14 loss, Lio noted the lessons learned: “We had to look after our game and what we can control, rather than looking at matchups.” He believes that the experience gained from that game contributed to the team’s playoff success.
As the season approaches, the spotlight remains on Lio and Vreeken. The dual quarterback situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Gaels. The outcome of their opening game will be pivotal in determining the team’s direction for the rest of the season. With a strong focus on preparation and teamwork, the Gaels are set to make an impact in the upcoming campaign.
