Blue Jays Edge Cubs 2-1 as Guerrero Jr. Homers, Scherzer Shines
URGENT UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays triumphed over the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in a thrilling matchup on August 14, 2025, at Rogers Centre. The decisive moment came when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. launched a two-run homer that pushed the Blue Jays past the Cubs, securing their position as leaders in the American League.
With Davis Schneider on base after a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, Guerrero connected on an 0-2 curveball, sending it just over the wall in left-center for his 20th home run of the season. This crucial hit proved to be the game-winner as the Blue Jays improved to 71-51 for the year, while the Cubs fell to 68-52, marking their fourth loss in six games.
Max Scherzer delivered a stellar performance, outdueling Matthew Boyd. Scherzer pitched effectively, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out three batters. He was replaced after giving up a leadoff double to Matt Shaw in the eighth inning. The bullpen stepped up as Brendon Little and Seranthony Dominguez secured the final three outs, with Dominguez striking out Carson Kelly with two runners in scoring position.
“It was a great team effort, and Vladimir came through when it mattered the most,” said Scherzer post-game.
For the Cubs, Michael Busch managed to hit a solo homer, marking his 24th of the season, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap. Boyd, despite the loss, pitched well, allowing only two hits and two earned runs over seven innings, raising his earned-run average slightly to 2.46.
The game attracted a sellout crowd of 43,270 fans, all eager to witness a competitive afternoon under the open roof. The match concluded in a brisk two hours and six minutes, providing fans with an exhilarating experience.
KEY MOMENT: One of the standout plays was Schneider’s incredible diving catch that robbed Canadian rookie Owen Caissie of his first big-league hit in the second inning. Caissie, who hails from nearby Burlington, Ontario, was recalled from Triple-A Iowa earlier that day.
UP NEXT: The Blue Jays will continue their six-game homestand on Friday night against the Texas Rangers. Scheduled to start for Toronto is Chris Bassitt with an 11-6 record and a 4.18 ERA, facing off against Jacob DeGrom of the Rangers, who holds a 10-5 record and a 2.86 ERA.
This report by The Canadian Press highlights the urgency and excitement surrounding the Blue Jays’ recent success and sets the stage for their upcoming games, keeping fans engaged and eager for more action.
