Deleau Farmers’ Market Draws 500 Attendees, Key Candidates Present

UPDATE: The annual Deleau Farmers’ Market exploded with energy on October 5, 2023, attracting nearly 500 attendees and key political candidates as they gear up for the upcoming byelection in Spruce Woods. The vibrant scene at Deleau Centennial Park featured rows of vendors showcasing homegrown produce, baked goods, and delicious food, creating a lively atmosphere that drew in community members and tourists alike.
The event served as a critical platform for local leaders, including Premier Wab Kinew, who engaged with residents while campaigning alongside NDP candidate Ray Berthelette. “This is a great community event with a lot of people,” Kinew remarked, emphasizing the importance of connecting with constituents during this election season.
Organized by Scott Phillips, a Ward 2 councillor, the market featured approximately 30 vendors, making it one of the largest outdoor farmers’ markets in western Manitoba. Phillips noted that the gate and vendor fees, which totaled nearly $1,300, will contribute to park maintenance and upgrades, including tree treatments and additional campsites. “It’s huge for us,” he stated, reflecting on the event’s significance for the small community.
Among the vendors, Tesa Steinke, a newcomer to the Deleau market, reported brisk sales of her baked goods, including pies and butter tarts. “It’s pretty good; I think we’re about half sold,” she said just 45 minutes into the two-hour event. Her decision to participate was driven by a recommendation after slower sales at markets in nearby Souris.
Another vendor, David Smith, showcased his hand-turned wooden products and shared positive feedback from attendees. “It’s been pretty good, really nice people and lots of interest,” he noted, highlighting a noticeable influx of American tourists visiting the area.
Local resident Gail Barre expressed her delight at the market, stating, “It has a little bit of everything.” She purchased a variety of items, including fresh produce and baked goods, further illustrating the market’s appeal.
Political candidates were also out in force. Colleen Robbins, a Progressive Conservative candidate, relished the opportunity to connect with constituents, saying, “It brings people together and gives them the opportunity to show their goods.” She was seen engaging with fellow PC leader Obby Khan, who actively mingled with attendees, sharing his past experiences as a Winnipeg Blue Bombers player while signing cards for children.
Liberal candidate Stephen Reid emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, “I want to get into the community and see as many people as I can.” Reid’s commitment to connecting with voters illustrates the candidates’ strategic focus leading up to the polls.
As the market concluded, Phillips joyfully declared the event a “home run,” comparing its success to Joe Carter’s legendary walk-off home run in the 1993 World Series. The large turnout not only underscored community spirit but also set the stage for an electrifying election season ahead.
With the byelection on the horizon, all eyes will be on how candidates leverage platforms like the Deleau Farmers’ Market to engage with voters and showcase their commitment to the community. Stay tuned for more updates as the political landscape evolves in the coming weeks.
