Winnipeg Choir’s Air Canada Flight Canceled, 31 Members Heartbroken
URGENT UPDATE: The Melos Folk Ensemble’s travel plans have been shattered as Air Canada canceled their flights just hours before departure. The choir, comprised of 31 members, was scheduled to fly from Toronto to Bogota today to perform at an international folk festival, but instead found themselves gathering in a Winnipeg restaurant to process their disappointment.
“We were due to meet at the airport at 12:30 PM,” said Michael Zakaluzny, co-director of the ensemble. Their excitement turned to despair this morning when they received the shocking news that their flight was among over 500 flights canceled due to labor action by flight attendants.
“This cancellation means so much more than just missing a flight,” Zakaluzny explained. “We had dedicated countless hours preparing, even learning a Spanish song to share with the people in Colombia. Now, we won’t be able to perform for them.”
While Air Canada has offered refunds and the option to reschedule flights, the ensemble faces significant challenges. Gábor Lukács, president of Air Passenger Rights, advises travelers to think strategically: “If they tell you there are no other flights, don’t take a refund. Buy yourself a ticket for whatever destination you need, keep your receipts, and make Air Canada pay for it later.”
The choir’s options are severely limited due to the size of the group and their international destination. “Our travel agent is scrambling for alternative routes, but with such a large group, pivoting on short notice is nearly impossible,” Zakaluzny added.
As the ensemble members gathered to reflect on their unfortunate experience, they tried to make the best of a bad situation. “This was the next best thing—enjoying some food and drinks while we talk about how this has not worked out for us.”
In an official statement, Air Canada acknowledged the disruption: “We regret the impact on customers. Those whose flights are canceled are eligible for a full refund, which can be obtained online or through the Air Canada mobile app. While we have made arrangements with other carriers to provide alternate travel options, securing such capacity will take time and may not be immediately possible.”
The Melos Folk Ensemble’s heartache highlights the ripple effect of airline cancellations, leaving not just logistical nightmares but also emotional scars for those involved. The choir remains hopeful that a solution will emerge, but for now, they are staying home and navigating the fallout of this sudden cancellation.
As the travel chaos continues, other affected passengers are urged to stay informed and proactive regarding their travel plans. The situation remains fluid, with more updates expected as the day unfolds.
