Halton Learning Foundation Launches Fundraiser for Student Supplies

In a significant initiative to support local students, the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) has launched a fundraiser aimed at providing essential back-to-school supplies. This effort comes in response to a staggering increase of 3,600 requests for basic school supplies during the 2024-25 school year, marking a 20 percent rise from the previous year. The foundation seeks to ensure that every student within the Halton District School Board starts the academic year equipped with the tools necessary for success.
According to HLF CEO Marc Clare, confidence plays a crucial role in a student’s ability to succeed. “We want every student to begin the school year with confidence and the tools they need to thrive,” Clare stated. “But for at least one in ten families in our community, the basic costs of returning to school—like backpacks, lunch, or proper shoes—are out of reach. When students have what they need, they feel seen, supported, and ready to succeed.”
Community Support Needed for Fundraiser
To address this pressing need, the HLF encourages residents of Halton to contribute through their website, GoBack2School.ca. Donations will be allocated towards providing gift cards to families, enabling them to purchase supplies tailored to their children’s specific needs rather than receiving pre-packed items. This approach empowers families to choose what is most necessary for their students, fostering a sense of ownership and pride.
HLF’s mascot, Carrie the Backpack, has taken on the role of back-to-school ambassador, urging local businesses to participate in Carrie the Backpack Day, scheduled for September 19. This event aims to raise further awareness and support for the cause. More details about the event can be found on the HLF website.
Making a Difference in Education
The Halton Learning Foundation’s commitment to student success reflects a broader understanding of the challenges many families face in providing basic educational necessities. By rallying community support, the foundation hopes to alleviate some of the financial burdens that can hinder a child’s educational journey. Ensuring access to essential supplies can significantly impact not only a student’s academic performance but also their overall well-being and self-esteem.
As the new school year approaches, the HLF invites everyone in the Halton region to join in making a tangible difference in the lives of local students. Every contribution, no matter the size, can help equip children with the tools they need to succeed in their educational endeavors. Together, the community can help foster an environment where all students feel prepared and confident as they head back to school.
