The University of Alberta has improved its standing in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), now ranking among the top 150 institutions worldwide and fifth in Canada. This marks an advancement from last year’s position, where it was ranked sixth nationally. The ARWU is a respected global list that evaluates thousands of universities based on various criteria.

In this year’s rankings, the University of Calgary placed sixth in Canada and within the top 200 globally. Notably, only three Canadian universities made it to the global top 100: the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, and McGill University. The University of Toronto led the Canadian contingent, securing the 25th spot worldwide. The University of British Columbia followed closely, ranking 53rd globally and second in Canada, while McGill University held the 76th position globally and ranked third nationally.

The ARWU evaluates institutions based on factors such as faculty quality, major awards, the number of highly cited researchers, and publications in leading academic journals. This year, more than 2,500 universities were assessed, with Harvard University maintaining its position at the top for the 23rd consecutive year. Following Harvard are Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
