New Basketball Court Opens in Winnipeg’s North End, Inspires Community

URGENT UPDATE: A brand new basketball court and upgraded playground have officially opened in Winnipeg’s North End, transforming the area into a vibrant hub for recreation. The grand opening took place on July 15, 2023, at the Northwood Community Centre, located at 1415 Burrows Ave., marking a significant investment in community development.
City officials, alongside provincial and federal representatives, celebrated the completion of this project, which was funded by a total budget of approximately $604,000. The federal government contributed $149,000, the province provided $230,000, and the city added $225,000 to the initiative. This is a vital addition to the Burrows Central neighbourhood, where community engagement and safe recreational spaces are urgently needed.
“This court and this playground will give our kids a safe place to run, laugh, and learn,” stated Point Douglas Coun. Vivian Santos. She emphasized the importance of such facilities for families, providing a welcoming gathering place and an affordable recreational option.
The new court features high-quality backboards, rims, and official game lines, thanks to the non-profit organization Buckets & Borders, in partnership with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and TelPay. Simi Shittu, a centre for the Sea Bears, highlighted the significance of such spaces for youth, stating, “Growing up with dreams of being a professional athlete, this is the type of thing we wanted growing up.”
A stunning mural created by local artist Jonato Dalayoan and art students from Sisler High School adorns the court, celebrating the diverse cultures in the community. The mural prominently features the word “welcome” in multiple Indigenous languages: Aaniin (Ojibwe), Tânsi (Cree), Iyuskin (Dakota), and Peehtikway (Michif), honoring the land on which the court stands.
The court’s opening is part of broader improvements at the Northwood Community Centre, which also includes new playground equipment, seating areas, and asphalt pathways. These enhancements aim to foster a sense of community and provide accessible recreational opportunities for residents.
Lora Meseman, executive director of the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, stressed the importance of such recreational facilities for youth engagement. She noted, “We’ve seen more and more basketball courts going up at community centres, and the kids love it.” This sentiment echoes the community’s need for positive recreational spaces that keep children occupied and engaged.
Since its inception, Buckets & Borders has successfully built two other basketball courts in Winnipeg, enhancing recreational opportunities in the area. The organization is committed to revitalizing communities through basketball, creating a positive impact on local youth.
As local families gather at the new court, residents like AJ and Kat Staniscia expressed their excitement about the new facility. “It’s an incredible resource to have in this area because it brings the community together and allows children to get out and have more fun outside,” AJ Staniscia noted.
The opening of this court is more than just a sports facility; it serves as a symbol of community collaboration, resilience, and the power of imagination. As excitement builds in Winnipeg’s North End, this initiative exemplifies the profound impact of investing in community spaces that foster inclusivity, health, and joy.
