Colwood’s Island Highway to Close Overnight for Galloping Goose Bridge

URGENT UPDATE: The City of Colwood has just announced overnight closures along a stretch of Island Highway as construction continues on the new, multi-million dollar Galloping Goose pedestrian and cycling bridge. These temporary closures will take place on August 27 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and August 29 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., causing significant disruptions for drivers in the area.

The closures affect the highway between Wale Road and Goldstream Avenue, with detours in place to help minimize traffic disruptions. Clear signage and traffic control personnel will be present to guide motorists. Local access will remain available, and emergency vehicles will receive priority access at all times.

This construction project aims to bridge a long-standing gap in the Galloping Goose trail, which spans approximately 55 kilometers from Victoria to Sooke, providing a vital link for pedestrians and cyclists. Currently, trail users must navigate detours along Wale Road and Island Highway, waiting at traffic lights and maneuvering along sidewalks to reconnect with the trail.

As the city ramps up construction, crews will prepare for the installation of bridge spans and decking over Island Highway starting Monday, August 18. Recent efforts have focused on steel fabrication, which is now complete, and girders will soon be lifted into position, with the construction of approach ramps expected in September.

The bridge project, which began in March, has an estimated 32-week timeline and is on track for completion before the 2026 grant funding deadline. A detour for trail users will remain in effect until October 31, as the city works to enhance this critical infrastructure.

The city has secured a grant of $3.6 million from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program, contributing to the overall project cost estimated at $6.3 million. Officials emphasize the bridge will significantly improve safety and accessibility, encouraging more residents and visitors to walk or bike in Colwood.

The Galloping Goose trail attracts over 270,000 pedestrians and cyclists annually near Wale Road, highlighting its importance to community health and well-being.
