Urgent Search for Missing Norwegian Hiker in Manitoba Underway

UPDATE: A frantic search is unfolding for missing Norwegian hiker Steffen Skjottelvik, 29, in northern Manitoba after he reportedly lost one of his two dogs to a wolf attack. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have confirmed that Skjottelvik, who embarked on his journey on July 25 from Fort Severn, Ontario, is unaccounted for as search efforts intensify.

Skjottelvik had planned to reach York Factory, Manitoba, by August 15, covering over 300 kilometers on foot. Contact was made with him on August 13 at Nanuk Camp, approximately 40 kilometers east of York Factory. He reported losing one of his dogs during the trek. The following day, he informed authorities that he expected to arrive at York Factory on schedule.

However, only one of his dogs has reached its destination. Eyewitnesses in Fort Severn believe a malnourished Husky that appeared in the community may be the missing dog, initially thought to have been killed in the wolf attack.

Authorities are deeply concerned for Skjottelvik’s safety as he navigates treacherous terrain along the Hudson Bay shoreline, an area known for its polar bear and wolf populations. “Due to the extreme challenges of this area, most of the searching will be done via aircraft, boats, and drones,” stated RCMP Sgt. Paul Manaigre in an email.

The initial search efforts have involved local guides and a helicopter dispatched from Fort Severn, patrolling the Hayes River with no success thus far. To bolster the search, the Canadian Rangers and members of Manitoba Conservation are flying in today to assist. A local guide from Gillam, who is familiar with the area, will also join the search by boat, while an RCMP officer will utilize a drone for aerial surveillance.

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as Skjottelvik is an experienced wilderness traveler, but the harsh conditions he faces pose significant risks. Community members and fellow travelers are rallying, sharing information on social media and encouraging widespread awareness of the search.
