Impaired Driving Suspect Remains in Custody After Traffic Incident
A 19-year-old man accused of impaired driving and fleeing a traffic stop will remain in custody at least until September 3, 2023. Kane Anignostis Burrows faces multiple charges, including impaired driving and breaches of release conditions, stemming from an incident that occurred in the early hours of August 8.
During a hearing at the Calgary Court of Justice, defence attorney Alain Hepner requested an adjournment for Burrows’ case, stating he is working on a potential bail release plan. Hepner informed Justice Sean Dunnigan that he would keep the assigned Crown prosecutor, Greg Piper, updated on any developments regarding the bail application.
Burrows was arrested after police reported that a BMW M5 fled from a traffic stop and accelerated at a high speed on MacLeod Trail. According to a police statement, while attempting to evade officers, the driver turned onto 58th Avenue S.W. and crashed into a parked vehicle, causing a chain reaction that damaged seven cars.
The Crown has indicated its intention to seek the revocation of Burrows’ bail related to charges from a previous incident. He is expected to appear for a preliminary inquiry in November regarding six charges, including impaired driving causing death linked to a crash on December 23, 2022.
In that earlier incident, a 2018 BMW M240i veered off the road on Glenmore Trail S.W. and struck a stationary crane, resulting in serious injuries to an 18-year-old passenger, Zachary Legault. Legault was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition and later died from his injuries.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Burrows remains in custody, with further updates anticipated as his defence counsel works towards a bail plan.
