BREAKING: Two drivers have been charged with impaired driving after a significant police operation in Prince Edward County. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced these charges following a routine RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program conducted on August 16, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m. near Sandbanks Provincial Park.

During the RIDE program, a vehicle approached the checkpoint where officers initiated a conversation with the driver. Officers quickly suspected impairment and administered an approved roadside alcohol screening device. The driver, identified as Juran Thangavelauthapillai, aged 32 from Bowmanville, failed the screening and was subsequently transported to the detachment for further testing.

Thangavelauthapillai faces multiple charges, including:
– Operation while impaired
– Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
– Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat impaired driving, especially during peak travel periods. Authorities urge the public to prioritize safety and make responsible choices when consuming alcohol.

With impaired driving being a leading cause of accidents, the implications of these charges resonate deeply within the community. The OPP emphasizes that such operations will continue to ensure road safety for all.
