Montego Glover Reflects on Her Role in Broadway’s ‘Gypsy’

Broadway star Montego Glover recently discussed her experience in the revival of Gypsy, where she showcased her talents as Mama Rose during key performances. Glover stepped into the role whenever Audra McDonald was unavailable, adding her unique flair to the character. This opportunity allowed her to connect deeply with a complex figure in musical theatre.
Reflecting on her time in Gypsy, Glover described the experience as “exhilarating” and a “once in a lifetime feeling.” She expressed her appreciation for Mama Rose’s multifaceted nature, stating, “I loved her complexity. She is witty, wise, ballsy, damaged, beautiful, tough, misguided, naive and smart.” Glover found joy in exploring these different dimensions of the character, highlighting the depth that such roles can offer to performers.
Looking ahead, Glover outlined her ambitions in the industry. “Work as always: the theatre, continued work in TV and film, voice-over in animation, narration, gaming, commercials. Maybe a concert or two. And a bit of downtime too,” she said. She emphasized that New York City serves as a perfect playground for artists, offering myriad ways to relax and recharge.
Glover’s impressive career includes winning the Drama Desk Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Musical” for her performance in Memphis in 2010. She was also nominated for a Tony Award for “Best Actress in a Musical” for the same role. “I’m incredibly honored. Being recognized for my work in this way is the kind of gift that lasts your whole life. I treasure that,” she acknowledged.
In the context of today’s fast-paced digital landscape, Glover noted the challenges artists face. “It feels fast! So much of the work of an artist moves very quickly now,” she remarked. Glover aims to balance this rapid pace with the essential, often lengthy, processes of creating art. “Those (sometimes long) stretches of time that are very necessary to making art…honoring and practicing that,” she added, underscoring the importance of artistic integrity.
For aspiring actors, Glover offered tailored advice based on their age. “In general: keep trying and keep going. Enjoy yourself. Read, read, read: novels, plays, short stories, and poetry,” she advised. She encouraged young performers to immerse themselves in various forms of art, stating, “You can’t make art unless you actually experience it and support it.”
Glover also shared her personal definition of success: “Success, to me, means confidence in my work, my work ethic, and my abilities.” She emphasized the significance of being well-known and respected in her field for the contributions she makes.
Expressing gratitude to her fans, Glover said, “Thank you for supporting me in so many wonderful, surprising ways and in every single place I’ve ever performed. Thank you for supporting art and artists.” Her appreciation reflects a deep connection with her audience, which has been pivotal in her journey.
For those interested in following Glover’s career and insights, she is active on social media platforms, particularly Instagram. As a Tony-nominated performer, her journey continues to inspire both fans and fellow artists alike.
