UPDATE: Hurricane Erin is currently impacting the US East Coast, bringing life-threatening rip currents and dangerous surf conditions. Officials warn these hazards will persist for at least the next couple of days as the storm advances northward. Parts of the Atlantic coastline, particularly the North Carolina Outer Banks, have already experienced heavy rainfall.

As of now, maximum sustained winds from Erin are around 105 mph (approximately 165 km/hNational Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed that tropical storm conditions will continue to affect the Outer Banks on Thursday and spread into Virginia soon after. Authorities are issuing urgent warnings for high winds in parts of New England.

Despite not making landfall, the storm’s effects are significant. Beaches are closing, and residents face potential flooding and road closures. The National Weather Service (NWS) emphasized, “Life-threatening surf and rip currents will be churning up and down the East Coast through the next couple of days.” They advise beachgoers to heed the guidance of lifeguards and local authorities.

In light of the impending danger, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein declared a state of emergency earlier this week. He urged swimmers to avoid the hazardous waters after multiple rescue operations were conducted at Wrightsville Beach on Monday. The communities of Hatteras and Ocracoke have been ordered to evacuate due to fears they could become isolated by the storm.

Residents are expressing deep concern about the storm’s impact. Carol Dillon, a 96-year-old motel owner in Hatteras, shared her fears about losing her property: “This is our livelihood. We could lose those two buildings that are in the water right now. I’m hoping we won’t – I do a lot of praying.”

Hurricane Erin, the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, reached category five status on Saturday but has since fluctuated to a category two storm. The situation remains fluid as Erin continues to affect the region.

In Turks and Caicos, public services were suspended on the largest island as the storm passed, and over 150,000 residents in Puerto Rico lost power due to high winds damaging electricity lines, according to local energy company Luma.

As the storm progresses, residents and officials alike are preparing for further developments. With predictions of an above-average hurricane season this year, experts are stressing the importance of preparedness and vigilance. The NHC and NWS continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as they become available.
