Local Businesses Unite to Support Charity with Gift Basket Event

This weekend, local businesses come together to support the community through a charity event hosted by Northern Baskets Plus. On March 15, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the store will feature over 60 local vendors offering a wide array of gift basket options and individual items, with proceeds benefiting Harvest Algoma.
Owner Angela Charbonneau initiated the event to highlight local vendors while making a positive impact in the community. “I had the idea to start an annual event where we could really showcase the vendors that are in the gift shop, and also do something to support the local community,” Charbonneau explained to SooToday. She expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Harvest Algoma, which focuses on food security in the region.
A portion of all sales from Northern Baskets Plus will be donated directly to Harvest Algoma, while participating vendors will also contribute to the cause. Visitors can make additional donations during the event, further enhancing the initiative’s impact.
In addition to the offerings from local vendors, two neighboring businesses, Mr. Sub and Soo Spice Yeti, will participate in the festivities. Soo Spice Yeti plans to provide delicious samples and host an eating contest, promising a lively atmosphere. Meanwhile, Mr. Sub will feature a special promotion with a two-for-one sub sale, adding to the fun for attendees.
Charbonneau started her business after struggling to find suitable gift basket options for a male recipient. “I couldn’t find anything that really fit who I was giving to,” she noted, which led her to create her own gift basket. Recognizing a gap in the market, she decided to offer customized baskets for a variety of occasions.
As the event approaches, excitement builds not just for the unique products available but also for the community spirit it fosters. Charbonneau believes that such collaborations among local businesses are essential for building a supportive network within the community.
The event at 253 Trunk Rd. aims to create an enjoyable environment while contributing to a meaningful cause. With local businesses rallying together, this charity event promises to be a significant occasion for both participants and attendees alike.
