UPDATE: In a heartbreaking turn of events, one of three abandoned kittens discovered in a Kelowna scrap yard is fighting for survival. The tiny kitten, found on August 14, 2023, is now receiving dedicated care in foster homes after two siblings tragically lost their lives.

The kittens were found scattered across the scrap yard, mere days old, prompting immediate action from a local worker who rushed them to an animal hospital. “We were contacted by the finder who was working at the yard,” said Shannon Paille, manager of the BC SPCA Kelowna. “One was barely a day old and still had the placenta attached.”

Despite extensive efforts to locate their mother or any remaining siblings, none were found. Paille expressed the sorrowful reality, stating, “It’s heartbreaking to imagine these tiny kittens alone, without their mother or even each other for warmth and protection.”

Upon arrival at the animal hospital, the kittens were in critical condition. Unfortunately, one was too far gone and had to be humanely euthanized. “The other two were placed in an incubator and given fluids overnight,” Paille reported. Despite all efforts, the second kitten also succumbed to health complications and was subsequently euthanized.

However, there is a glimmer of hope. The surviving kitten has been placed in the care of a dedicated foster who is committed to nurturing him back to health. “They are bottle feeding him every two hours and weighing him daily to ensure he is gaining weight,” Paille noted. The foster home is equipped with an animal-safe heating pad, providing a warm and secure environment essential for newborn kittens.

Paille remains cautiously optimistic about the kitten’s future. “This kitten has a fighting spirit. The foster reports he is eating well and is gaining weight,” she said, emphasizing the importance of continued support for the animal’s recovery.

The BC SPCA is actively covering the emergency medical costs for these kittens, showcasing their commitment to animal welfare. Anyone wanting to contribute to the care of this kitten and others can visit spca.bc.ca/donations-emergency-rescues for more information.
