Two Cases of West Nile Virus Confirmed in South East Health Unit

The South East Health Unit (SEHU) has reported the first two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) for the year, urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites. One case is confirmed while the other is probable, both involving residents from the Rideau Lakes, Westport area, and the Smiths Falls area.
According to the SEHU, the presence of WNV is not new to the region. Birds and mosquitoes carrying the virus have been detected throughout the years in various parts of the health unit’s jurisdiction. As of June 2025, monitoring efforts have already revealed positive mosquito pools within the region, highlighting ongoing concerns about the virus’s activity.
Health Precautions and Community Impact
In light of these findings, the SEHU is reminding community members to adopt protective measures against mosquito bites. Simple steps such as wearing long sleeves, using insect repellent, and eliminating standing water can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
West Nile Virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Although many individuals infected with WNV may not exhibit symptoms, the virus can lead to severe illness in some cases, particularly among older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.
As the summer months approach, the SEHU emphasizes the importance of community awareness and vigilance. The local health unit continues to monitor mosquito populations and test for the presence of the virus, aiming to keep residents informed and safe.
Residents are encouraged to report any sightings of dead birds, as they can be an indicator of WNV activity in the area. The SEHU is committed to providing updates as more information becomes available and as further cases are identified.
With effective public health strategies and community engagement, the South East Health Unit strives to mitigate the impact of West Nile Virus and protect the health of its residents.
