Family Seeks Urgent Help to Reopen Boarded-Up Apartment in Prince Albert
UPDATE: A family in Prince Albert is urgently seeking city council assistance to reopen their boarded-up apartment building on 13th Street West. The building, which has been closed for six years due to gang activity, houses 30 units crucial for addressing the city’s housing shortage.
Marie Chiem, the owner’s daughter, stated, “We’re asking the city if they can forgive the penalties and interest portion that we owe for the property tax arrears, not all of it.” The family is willing to pay the actual property taxes owed but needs relief from the penalties to fund essential repairs, including plumbing and electrical updates.
Chiem expressed optimism, stating, “We have a new mayor, and we also have new city council members.” This change in leadership gives them hope to revitalize 13th Street and bring much-needed life back to the area near the Gateway Mall. The family believes reopening the building could significantly contribute to the neighborhood’s recovery.
The city has yet to issue a definitive response. However, Mayor Bill Powalinsky confirmed, “Since 2020, there have been moves to renovate that building. Everybody’s interested in seeing it repurposed.” He emphasized that the city’s Planning and Development Department will work diligently to support initiatives aimed at revitalizing the downtown area.
Chiem also called for community support, saying, “We’re also hoping that we’ll get support from the police, bylaw, and other community members to help us out and just watch out for each other.”
As the family awaits a decision from city officials, the boarded-up building remains a poignant reminder of the challenges facing local communities in Prince Albert. The potential reopening could not only provide housing but also play an essential role in enhancing the area’s safety and vibrancy.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to follow this developing story as the family continues to advocate for the reopening of their building. The community’s response and the city council’s next steps will be critical in determining the future of this important project.
