UPDATE: A truck driver has been arrested just days ago after evading authorities for nine months following a tragic crash in Manitoba that claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter. Navjeet Singh, 25, was apprehended in Ontario on Thursday, and the RCMP confirmed his arrest as he prepares to face serious charges in connection with the incident.

On November 15, 2024, Singh was behind the wheel of a semi-trailer that ran a stop sign and collided with the SUV of Sara Unger, 35, and her eight-year-old daughter, Alexa Unger, approximately 13 kilometers west of Altona. Both victims tragically lost their lives in the crash, leaving their family devastated. Singh is now facing two counts of dangerous driving causing death and one count of obstructing a peace officer.

The family expressed relief upon learning of Singh’s arrest, stating they had feared he might have fled the country. They are now calling on both the Canadian and provincial governments to address what they describe as “corruption and negligence” regarding the licensing and training of foreign truck drivers. “Public safety should come before political convenience,” they urged in a heartfelt statement.

Singh had initially been released from the hospital after the crash before disappearing. Authorities believe he was hiding in the Greater Toronto Area, and there were concerns he might attempt to leave Canada entirely. Investigators from multiple agencies, including Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement and Transport Canada, worked tirelessly to locate him.

In a previous statement, Sgt. Paul Manaigre of the Manitoba RCMP admitted that, in hindsight, they should have detained Singh after the crash. “Hindsight is always 20/20,” he remarked, reflecting on the decision-making at the time.

The Unger family described Sara as a devoted mother, deeply involved in her community and church. Alexa was remembered as a vibrant child, full of life and passion. Their loss has left an indelible mark, and the family continues to seek justice.

As Singh awaits his return to Winnipeg for a court appearance, the community remains on edge, hoping for accountability and changes in regulations to prevent future tragedies on the roads. Authorities are expected to release more details about the case later today, keeping the public informed as this urgent situation develops.
