A remarkable event unfolded at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) in Vancouver as 4-H members showcased their hard work at the annual auction. Among them, Sophie Jolivet from the Saanich 4-H Lamb Club stood out, earning the reserve champion market lamb title. Her lamb, weighing 131 pounds, attracted a bid of $9.50 per pound from Meadow Valley Meats.

The auction featured a vibrant atmosphere as participants led champion hogs, lambs, goats, and steers, with community supporters eagerly participating. This year, a total of 102 animals were auctioned off, including 37 hogs, 26 sheep, 8 goats, and 31 steers. The event successfully raised more than $336,000 for the 4-H youth, funds that will directly support future projects, education, and leadership training.

Community Support and Youth Development

The enthusiasm surrounding the auction reflects the dedication of the young participants. “Behind every ribbon is months of feeding, training, and care. Today’s auction turned that effort into opportunity for our 4-H members and we are grateful to every buyer who raised a paddle,” stated Christie Kerr, Director of Fair Operations at PNE.

Kerr emphasized the skills and commitment demonstrated by the youth, stating that the backing from local families and businesses underscores the community’s investment in these young entrepreneurs. The funds raised will help equip the participants with necessary resources for their future endeavors, fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth.

The PNE auction stands as a testament to the importance of agricultural education and community support, highlighting the role that events like this play in shaping the future of young individuals involved in farming and livestock management. The positive outcomes from this year’s auction will ensure that the legacy of 4-H continues to thrive in British Columbia.
