Hundreds Ride for Recovery in Calgary: A Community Celebration
BREAKING: Hundreds of motorcyclists flooded the streets of Calgary this morning for the 17th annual Ride for Recovery, an event aimed at celebrating and supporting the recovery community. Kicking off at 8:30 a.m. from Fresh Start Recovery on 41 Ave N.E., participants visited 12 unique stops throughout the city, creating a powerful display of solidarity and hope.
This year’s turnout was impressive, with an estimated 200 to 300 motorcyclists taking part. For Bruce Holstead, executive director of Fresh Start, the event is not just a ride; it’s a vital opportunity to foster connections within the community. “We need community to do what we do, and this event allows us to build relationships, friendships, and garner support for what we do,” Holstead stated.
The Ride for Recovery also highlights the critical work Fresh Start does daily, housing and supporting over 120 individuals in treatment and another 120 in post-treatment housing. Holstead emphasized that addiction affects everyone, stating, “There’s nobody that isn’t affected by addiction. Whatever brings the people here, it’s unique to every individual, just like addiction is.”
Among the riders was Bryan Flack, an instructor for the addictions program at Bow Valley College. He shared that recovery is deeply rooted in community and connection. “Recovery is all about reconnection and relationship and community,” Flack remarked. “Participating in this really shows we appreciate Fresh Start and everything they do for our community.”
Flack conveyed the profound significance of motorcycling for those in recovery. “When I hop on the bike, really, it’s about freedom,” he explained. “When I was in my addiction, I had no freedom. I was a prisoner within my own body and my own mind. Biking symbolizes being free and having the opportunity to make decisions aligned with my way of life and being of service to all community and mankind.”
The Ride for Recovery is more than just a motorcycle journey; it is a powerful reminder of the strength of community in overcoming addiction. As participants ride together, they not only celebrate their victories but also reinforce the message that support is available and recovery is possible.
Stay tuned for updates on this impactful event and how it continues to shape the recovery narrative in Calgary.
