UPDATE: The San Francisco 49ers delivered a stunning blow to Trey Lance’s return to the Bay Area, defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 30-23 in a gripping exhibition match on Saturday night at Levi’s Stadium. This marked Lance’s first game in the stadium since his trade to Dallas, making the outcome particularly poignant.

Just minutes before the end of the game, Curtis Robinson intercepted a pass from DJ Uiagalelei and returned it 32 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 6:06 remaining, sealing the victory for San Francisco. Lance struggled to find his rhythm throughout the game, finishing with only 5 completions on 8 attempts for 38 yards, as the Chargers faced difficulties against a 49ers defense lacking several starters.

The Chargers’ offense faltered early, managing three consecutive three-and-outs to start the game. Lance, vying for the backup role behind Justin Herbert, was unable to capitalize on his opportunities. His final drive ended in disappointment after a false start on fourth-and-3 from the 38-yard line forced yet another punt.

The match was characterized by a sluggish pace, with the teams combining for an astonishing eight punts in the first quarter—an occurrence not seen in the NFL since 2017. The 49ers took advantage of a muffed punt by Luke Grimm, leading to a 22-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Mordecai to Demarcus Robinson. Robinson, facing a potential three-game suspension for violating league policy, made the most of his playing time.

In a twist of fate, Grimm’s second muffed punt in the fourth quarter allowed Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens, to score on a 22-yard touchdown catch, adding to the excitement of the game.

Kicking woes continued for the 49ers as Jake Moody missed an extra point in the second quarter, raising concerns about his reliability. Moody, who had struggled last season, had previously impressed with five field goals, including a game-winner from 59 yards against Las Vegas. However, he bounced back in the second half, converting three extra points and a field goal to the crowd’s delight.

Looking ahead, the Chargers will kick off their season on September 5 in Brazil against the Kansas City Chiefs. Meanwhile, the 49ers prepare for their opener against Seattle on September 7.

Stay tuned for further updates on both teams as the new season approaches.
