BC Hydro Restores Power to Over 500 Customers in Bamfield

BC Hydro has successfully restored power to more than 500 customers in Bamfield, located on Vancouver Island, following extensive damage caused by the Mount Underwood wildfire. Restoration efforts began on August 16, 2025, as crews worked to repair the fire-damaged infrastructure in challenging conditions near Port Alberni.

Crews from BC Hydro faced significant obstacles while addressing the damage. The company reported that dozens of technicians and vegetation management personnel were deployed to the area. They encountered extremely difficult terrain, necessitating the installation of 63 new poles and 65 new power lines along a six-kilometre stretch of affected network. Portions of this route were situated on steep and unstable ground. A temporary fix has been implemented in the most challenging section, with plans for a permanent solution once conditions improve.

Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro’s Vancouver Island community relations manager, acknowledged the difficult working conditions. He expressed gratitude to customers for their ongoing support and patience throughout the restoration process.

The British Columbia provincial transportation ministry has reported that Bamfield Road remains closed due to safety concerns stemming from the wildfire. The ministry indicated that there is currently no timeline for the road’s reopening.

“Falling rocks, dangerous trees, and a fire-damaged slope are presenting exceptionally challenging conditions,” the ministry stated in its announcement. The 76-kilometre road is owned both publicly and privately, and the ministry is collaborating with Mosaic Forest Management, which manages part of the route, to develop a plan for reopening.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the Mount Underwood wildfire has stabilized at approximately 35 square kilometres in size. This wildfire is one of over 60 active fires currently burning across the province.
