Google Messages Introduces QR Code Verification for Contacts

Google is set to enhance user security in its messaging platform with a new QR code verification feature aimed at confirming the identity of contacts. This capability is currently being rolled out in beta, allowing users to ensure that the person they are communicating with is indeed who they claim to be.

The QR code key verification feature was first highlighted by Google in October 2023 and is now nearing a wider release. According to reports from 9to5Google, this feature will be integrated into the Google Messages application under the ‘verify encryption’ option. Once implemented, users can access this feature by selecting a conversation and navigating to the ‘Details’ page by tapping the contact’s name in the app bar.

How QR Code Verification Works

Previously, the “verify encryption” function displayed an 80-digit code for comparison. With the upcoming update, users will see a “Security & privacy” section that allows them to “verify keys for this contact.” This new verification process ensures that only the intended recipients can read the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages exchanged between users.

To utilize the QR code feature, users can scan the QR code displayed on their contact’s device, while simultaneously asking the contact to scan their QR code. Verification status can be checked by accessing “Connected apps” in the Contacts app. Tapping “Your QR code” will lead to the “verification for Google Messages” option. Although this integration with the Google Contacts app is not yet live, it is anticipated to enhance the overall security experience.

Device Compatibility and Future Prospects

The QR code key verification feature is expected to be available for devices running Android 9 and above. Additionally, the potential for this unified public key verification to extend to third-party applications has also been suggested. Google aims to roll out this feature more broadly throughout 2024, enhancing privacy and security for its users.
