U.S. Coast Guard Seizes Record 61,740 Pounds of Drugs

UPDATE: In an unprecedented operation, the U.S. Coast Guard has offloaded a staggering 61,740 pounds of cocaine and 14,400 pounds of marijuana at Port Everglades in Florida, marking the largest drug haul in Coast Guard history. If this shipment had reached the streets, it could have delivered enough lethal doses to fatally overdose the entire population of Florida, with an estimated 23 million doses of cocaine alone.
This record-breaking seizure, valued at around $473 million, was confirmed by officials just moments ago. The drugs were intercepted during a series of operations that took place between June 26 and August 18, involving multiple U.S. Coast Guard cutters and Navy warships operating in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
Rear Adm. Adam Chamie stated, “This underscores the immense threat posed by transnational drug trafficking to our nation.” The operation involved three U.S. Coast Guard cutters, two Navy warships, a Netherlands warship, and support from Coast Guard helicopter units and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The commander of the cutter Hamilton, Capt. John B. McWhite, highlighted that the crew played a pivotal role in seizing a record 47,000 pounds of cocaine from 11 go-fast vessels—high-speed boats frequently used by traffickers. During these operations, 34 suspected drug traffickers were apprehended.
The Coast Guard’s on-board drone units were crucial in locating and tracking the traffickers’ vessels, demonstrating the advanced capabilities being deployed in this ongoing battle against drug smuggling. Since the beginning of 2023, the Coast Guard has seized an astonishing $2.2 billion worth of illegal drugs headed for the U.S.
This massive drug haul highlights the ongoing crisis of fentanyl trafficking, which poses a significant danger to public health. As emphasized by the Coast Guard, these drugs fuel cartels and transnational criminal organizations that produce and distribute fentanyl, exacerbating the opioid epidemic in the United States.
The Biden administration has made combating fentanyl trafficking a top priority. Recent legislative actions, including the bipartisan passage of The Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act, have strengthened penalties for traffickers, reflecting the urgency of the situation.
As authorities continue to address this pressing issue, the public is urged to remain vigilant. The ongoing threat of drug trafficking is more than a law enforcement issue; it affects communities across the nation. The Coast Guard’s latest success serves as a reminder of the critical importance of swift and coordinated action in the fight against drug-related crime.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities continue their efforts to combat the influx of illegal drugs into the United States.
