Urgent: Barrie Police Investigate Mailbox Thefts Across Neighborhoods
UPDATE: Barrie police have launched an urgent investigation following a series of mailbox thefts that occurred overnight on October 3, 2023. Multiple mailboxes across the southwest neighborhoods of Barrie were broken into, raising serious concerns about identity theft and community safety.
The incidents reportedly took place in several locations, including Thrushwood Drive, Cranberry Lane, Red Oak Drive, Sundew Drive, Lougheed Road near Selkirk Crescent, and Emms Drive and Jackson Street. Police confirmed that the locks on the mailboxes were destroyed, resulting in mail being either stolen or scattered on the ground.
Residents have expressed outrage on social media, with one person questioning, “How many different identities compromised in a single hit,” while another stated, “This is absolutely disgusting. Wow. Shameful.”
Authorities emphasize that damaging a Canada Post mailbox is an indictable offence under Canadian law, which could lead to significant jail time for the offenders. In light of these alarming developments, police urge anyone affected to contact Equifax Canada or Canada Post to mitigate potential identity theft risks.
Barrie police are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information or video surveillance footage related to these thefts is encouraged to reach out to the police immediately.
As the investigation unfolds, residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. This troubling crime wave highlights the urgent need for community awareness and proactive measures to safeguard personal information and property.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
