Katherine McCallum Joins Yukon NDP Race for Whitehorse West
URGENT UPDATE: Artist and former federal candidate Katherine McCallum is making headlines as she pivots to seek the Yukon NDP nomination for the Whitehorse West riding. This significant announcement was confirmed by the Yukon NDP today, with an endorsement from Yukon NDP Leader Kate White.
McCallum, a prominent local artist and community leader, expressed her commitment to improving the lives of Yukoners. In a statement, she emphasized the financial struggles many residents face: “Yukoners pour everything we have into making our territory a better place, but it’s getting harder for us to make ends meet and keep organizations running.”
This announcement follows McCallum’s recent political experience at the federal level, where she participated in an online all-candidates forum hosted by the Yukon Chamber of Commerce. Notably, she confronted an incident where a user spoofed the name of the Conservative candidate during the forum. Ultimately, Brendan Hanley of the Liberal Party won the territory’s sole seat in the House of Commons.
Originally from Australia, McCallum has become a significant figure in the Yukon arts scene since moving to Canada in 2001 and establishing Larrikin Entertainment. She serves as the artistic executive director and also teaches theatre at Yukon University. Additionally, she co-founded the Yukon Theatre for Young People.
This news comes in light of recent developments in the political landscape, with current Whitehorse West MLA Richard Mostyn announcing he will not seek re-election in the upcoming territorial elections, which must be called on or before October 3, 2023.
The Yukon NDP’s support for McCallum marks a pivotal moment as the party prepares for the elections ahead. Observers are keen to see how McCallum’s artistic background and community engagement will resonate with voters in Whitehorse West.
As the political scene rapidly evolves, all eyes will be on McCallum and her campaign strategy. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as Yukoners prepare for the impending elections.
