B.C. Groups Demand Action Against Gender Violence in Ottawa Meeting

URGENT UPDATE: On October 24, 2023, advocacy groups from British Columbia met with Canada’s Minister for Women and Gender Equality, Rechie Valdez, demanding immediate action to combat the escalating crisis of gender-based violence. The meeting unfolded against a backdrop of alarming incidents, including the recent murder of Bailey McCourt in Kelowna, allegedly by her ex-husband, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.
The coalition, comprising various organizations, including rural advocates, sexual assault centers, and inner-city services, voiced deep concerns over the rising rates of femicide—defined as the gender-related killing of women. “We’re a little bit nervous about where this country’s going around gender equality right now,” said Angela Marie MacDougall, executive director of Battered Women’s Support Services. “We wanted to look in her eyes and make sure that she understands what’s at stake.”
During this pivotal meeting, groups pressed Valdez on critical issues like housing insecurity and systemic failures to protect women from abusive partners. MacDougall emphasized that despite the government’s $500 million investment over three years into its National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, more funding is crucial to make a tangible difference. “Even if the government sticks to its 10-year commitment, we need to see increased funding,” she stated.
Valdez acknowledged the personal connection she has to the fight against gender-based violence, stating, “I also lost someone in my family… our government remains committed to continuing to fight against gender-based violence.” She reiterated that the national action plan is a long-term commitment, but activists are pushing for more immediate results.
The meeting also touched on the necessity of child care support, with Sharon Gregson, B.C. spokesperson for the $10-a-Day Childcare Campaign, asserting its importance to both gender justice and economic health. “There is a lot of room for improvement, and we were heartened to hear Minister Valdez say that the budget for women and gender equality in Canada is not being cut,” Gregson remarked.
As this story develops, advocates are closely monitoring the federal budget for indications of sustained support for anti-violence services. The urgency of this issue resonates deeply within communities across Canada, as advocates stress the need for core federal funding to ensure the survival and effectiveness of these essential services.
This meeting marks a critical moment in the ongoing fight against gender-based violence in Canada, as organizations unite to demand accountability and action from their government. The call for a distinct criminal offense for femicide is gaining momentum, pushing for necessary legislative changes that could save lives.
As the situation continues to evolve, the response from the Canadian government will be pivotal in shaping the future of gender equality and safety for women and girls across the nation. Advocates are determined to hold officials accountable, ensuring that the voices of the impacted are heard loud and clear in the halls of power.
Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent issue that affects countless lives across Canada.
