Urgent Update: Fugitive Father Spotted After Four Years on Run
URGENT UPDATE: New Zealand police have just released rare CCTV images showing a father on the run for nearly four years with his children. Tom Phillips absconded in December 2021 following a dispute with his former partner and has evaded capture ever since.
The police believe Phillips has been hiding in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island. The newly released footage captures two figures, one dressed in dark clothing and the other in camouflage, outside a store. Authorities suspect these individuals are Phillips and one of his three children, as confirmed by Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Saunders during a news conference.
The footage, recorded on Wednesday, reveals the pair using flashlights and allegedly breaking into a refrigerated container to steal groceries before fleeing on a quad bike. They were in the area for approximately 13 minutes.
“At the heart of this are three children who have been away from their home for four years,” stated Saunders. “Their well-being is our main focus.”
The children, identified as Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, now aged 9, 10, and 12, have not attended school since going on the run with their father. Since December 2021, police have linked Phillips to multiple crimes, including aggravated robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Authorities have rejected calls for more aggressive tactics, fearing potential harm to the children. “This will take as long as it takes,” Saunders emphasized. “Our focus is bringing those kids out safely. We’re not going to get into a confrontation situation.”
The case has captivated the nation, particularly in the Waikato area and the town of Marokopa, where Phillips is believed to have received assistance in eluding capture. This urgent situation continues to draw significant public attention as police work tirelessly to locate the family.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for a safe resolution. Further updates are expected as authorities continue their search for Tom Phillips and his children.
