Regina’s Labour Day Long Weekend: Open and Closed Services

As the summer season comes to an end, residents of Regina are preparing for the Labour Day long weekend, marking the last chance for leisure before the school year begins. This year, Labour Day falls on September 2, a statutory holiday in Canada established in 1894 to honor the achievements of the labour union movement and advocate for worker rights. For those seeking activities, the Regina Leader-Post has highlighted several events taking place in the city from August 29 to September 1.
Service Availability on Labour Day
Regina’s public services will operate with various schedules on Labour Day. The city’s transit system will follow the usual Sunday timetable, while the information center and RIDELine will remain closed. Paratransit services will be available from 08:00 to 21:00 on Monday, and city parking meters will not be enforced.
City facilities will have mixed availability. The landfill will operate from 07:30 to 17:30, with gates closing at 17:15. The household hazardous waste material depot will be closed. The Sandra Schmirler Leisure Centre will welcome visitors from 12:00 to 18:00, while the Northwest Leisure Centre, closed for maintenance until Sunday, will also open from 12:00 to 18:00. The Sportplex Fieldhouse will be available from 09:00 to 19:00, while the Lawson Aquatic Centre will remain closed for maintenance.
Several outdoor pools will be open, including Buffalo Meadows Pool from 12:00 to 17:00, Maple Leaf Pool from 08:00 to 17:00, and Massey Outdoor Pool from 12:00 to 17:00. Wascana Pool will operate from 07:00 to 20:00, while Regent Outdoor Pool will be closed.
The Regina Public Library will close all locations on Friday and Monday, reopening on Tuesday. The Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre will maintain its regular hours throughout the weekend.
Attractions and Retail Hours
Several attractions in Regina will remain open during the long weekend. The Royal Saskatchewan Museum will welcome visitors daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Government House will also be open during the same hours. The RCMP Heritage Centre operates daily from 10:00 to 17:00, while the Science Centre will have special hours from 11:00 to 16:00.
Conversely, the MacKenzie Art Gallery and Slate Art Gallery will be closed on both Sunday and Monday. The Floral Conservatory will not open until Tuesday.
Malls, including Southland Mall, Northgate Mall, Cornwall Centre, and Victoria Square Shopping Centre, will operate from 12:00 to 17:00 on Monday.
Most banks will not be in service, and residents are advised to confirm with their financial institutions. Government and civic offices will also be closed, resuming normal operations on Tuesday. As Labour Day is a federal statutory holiday, Canada Post will suspend mail collection and delivery on Monday.
Some grocery stores will operate on reduced hours; shoppers should check with local stores such as Safeway, Sobeys, and Sherwood Co-op for specific timings. City services for garbage, recycling, and food waste pickups will proceed as scheduled.
As residents enjoy the last long weekend of summer, these details will help them navigate the services and attractions available in Regina.
