Nanaimo Museum Launches Exhibit on City’s Unique Street Names

UPDATE: The Nanaimo Museum unveils an exciting new exhibit today, highlighting the city’s extraordinary and quirky street names. Residents and visitors alike are invited to explore “The Word on the Street: Roads that Built Nanaimo,” a captivating showcase prepared by history students at Vancouver Island University, now open until June 25, 2023.
Bizarre street names have become a hallmark of Nanaimo, known for its rich history and unique character. “People typically think I’m giving a fake address out,” says Manuela H., a resident of Twiggly Wiggly Road, just a stone’s throw from Jingle Pot Road. The exhibit brings to light the fascinating stories behind these names, which include notable streets like Bob O Link Way and Dingle Bingle Hill Road.
Mayor Leonard Krog embraces the city’s unusual street names, stating, “We don’t mind being number one,” referring to the absence of official records for the most unusually named streets per capita. He adds, “It just sounds good,” likening the appeal of the names to the charm of a politician’s speech.
The exhibit reveals intriguing origins behind some of Nanaimo’s most peculiar streets. Jingle Pot Road, for instance, derives its name from a tool used by coal miners—a pot with stones attached to a rope, signaling when it was time to hoist coal carts. Similarly, Bergen-Op-Zoom Drive commemorates a town in the Netherlands, where many Canadian soldiers from the Second World War are buried.
As for Twiggly Wiggly Road, its name pays homage to former mayor Frank Ney‘s daughter, who was affectionately nicknamed “Twiggy.” Ney, a former residential land developer, had the opportunity to name numerous streets throughout the city, leaving a legacy that continues to spark curiosity and delight among residents.
Despite occasional confusion caused by these whimsical names, Manuela H. expresses pride in her unique address, stating, “I think it’s unique.” This sentiment resonates with many residents who appreciate the charm and character these names bring to their community.
Don’t miss this chance to dive into the history and creativity that define Nanaimo’s streets. The exhibit is attracting attention and is sure to be a talking point for locals and tourists alike. Visit the Nanaimo Museum today to discover the stories behind the names that make this city one-of-a-kind.
