DeKalb Secures Victory Over Sycamore with Murray’s Goal
UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the DeKalb Barbs clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the Sycamore Spartans on Saturday, thanks to a pivotal goal from Zach Murray in the 67th minute. This win not only boosts DeKalb’s record to 2-1 but also secures them third place in the tournament.
The decisive moment came when Mauricio Jasso provided a crucial assist, elevating the Barbs above the Spartans, who now sit at 1-2. Fans in attendance at the game held their breath as Murray’s strike found the back of the net, marking a significant highlight in the tournament.
In related tournament news at Oregon, Genoa-Kingston triumphed over Marengo with a score of 2-1, securing seventh place among a competitive 12-team field. Ayden Hernandez and Adrian Jimenez each scored for Genoa-Kingston, while Josue Leon and Adrian Delgado contributed with assists. Earlier in the day, Genoa-Kingston faced tough opposition, losing 5-1 to United Township and 3-1 to Rochelle, with Hernandez scoring the lone goal in the latter match.
Meanwhile, at the Serena tournament, Indian Creek had a mixed performance, finishing 1-2 after a narrow 3-2 victory against Hinckley-Big Rock, but falling to Serena and Ottawa with scores of 2-1 and 5-2, respectively.
In boys cross country at the Kane County Invitational held at Settler’s Hill XC Course in Batavia, Carson Kaiser led the way for Kaneland, finishing first with a time of 15:22.2. His teammate Evan Whildin followed closely behind at 15:29.3, securing a solid victory for Kaneland with a total score of 58 points compared to Batavia’s 85.
In girls golf at the Oregon Scramble, the duo of Jordan Hargrave and Mariana Osorio from Genoa-Kingston carded an impressive score of 127. Their performance showcased the talent present in the tournament, though official team scores are still pending.
On the volleyball front at the Ottawa tournament, Indian Creek struggled, losing all four of their matches against Lexington, Byron, Streator, and IMSA. The Timberwolves faced tough competition, with scores highlighting their challenges—25-12, 25-4 against Lexington being one of the starkest.
In girls tennis at the Sycamore doubles tournament, the Spartans celebrated a successful day with four teams going 3-0 to win championships across various categories. Notable winners included Lila Ezell and Avery Olson at No. 2, Ryana White and Krista Cobb at No. 4, Reese Becker and Jada Prombo at No. 5, and Maddie Pickard and Hannah Ferguson at No. 6.
