Germany’s Merz Warns Ukraine War Will Drag On Amid Peace Talks
URGENT UPDATE: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared that the ongoing war in Ukraine is likely to endure for an extended period, emphasizing that wars typically conclude only through military defeat or economic exhaustion—neither of which he sees imminent for Kyiv or Moscow. His remarks come just one day before a deadline set by former U.S. President Donald Trump for a critical meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine aimed at facilitating peace talks.
During an interview with public broadcaster ZDF on Sunday, Merz expressed deep concern over the prolonged conflict, stating, “I am preparing myself inwardly for this war to last a long time.” This statement underscores the growing urgency among European leaders to address the conflict, especially as the potential for diplomatic resolutions hangs in the balance.
Merz, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, has publicly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for the escalation of hostilities. Both leaders are advocating for the United States to implement stricter sanctions against Russia to exert pressure for a peaceful resolution. Merz emphasized, “This cannot be at the price of Ukraine’s capitulation,” warning that such a scenario would likely lead to further aggression by Russia, targeting other nations, including Europe.
“And then the day after tomorrow it will be us,” Merz added. “That is not an option.”
As tensions escalate, the Kremlin has responded, accusing European powers of obstructing Trump’s peace efforts. A spokesperson reiterated that Russia would persist in its military operations in Ukraine until there are tangible signs of willingness from Kyiv to negotiate peace.
Amid these developments, the question of a potential deployment of German troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees remains contentious. While Britain and France are leading discussions on establishing a “reassurance force” to deter future Russian aggression, any indication of Germany’s involvement has sparked unease within the nation, which is still grappling with its historical legacy.
The urgency for a resolution is palpable, as the international community watches closely for any shifts in diplomatic efforts. As the situation evolves, leaders will need to navigate the delicate balance between providing support to Ukraine and preventing further escalation of the conflict.
What happens next remains uncertain. With Trump’s deadline approaching, all eyes will be on the reactions from both Washington and Moscow, as the possibility of renewed dialogue could significantly impact the trajectory of the war and its humanitarian consequences.
Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds, highlighting the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.
