Students Embrace New Beginnings on Move-In Day at Windsor

Students from around the world gathered in Windsor on August 27, 2023, to begin their university journey, marking a significant milestone as they moved into campus residences. The University of Windsor and St. Clair College welcomed over a thousand students, aided by volunteers who facilitated the move-in process.

Strong emotions filled the air as students packed their belongings, ready to start a new chapter in their lives. Zoe Rivera, a residence life team leader at the University of Windsor, noted the excitement among students. “I think there’s a lot of excited energy happening, and just students are looking forward to the school year,” she said. Many students expressed enthusiasm about personalizing their new living spaces.

Among the newcomers was Samiha Mozammel, who recently completed her undergraduate degree at Trent University in Oshawa. Now enrolled at the University of Windsor, she is pursuing a teaching career. “I’m a little bit nervous. It’s my first time moving away from home, but very, very excited,” Mozammel shared. Her passion for teaching stems from the impactful lessons learned in elementary school, inspired by her own teachers.

The day symbolized more than just a transition for students; it also marked an emotional moment for parents. When asked about his daughter’s decision to move, Samiha’s father, Mr. Mozammel, expressed a mix of pride and nostalgia. “When the first time she said, ‘I’ve been accepted from Windsor,’ I said, ‘No, I don’t want that,’” he remarked, laughter mingling with his emotions.

New Facilities Enhance Campus Life

This year, the University of Windsor unveiled a new residence, Rodzik Hall, which features six floors along with lounges and a dining hall. According to Rivera, the facility will accommodate approximately 420 students. “We’re super excited. All of the students are the first ones to live in that space,” she said, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the new building.

As move-in day concluded, students settled into their new environment, ready to embrace the upcoming academic year. The first day of classes is scheduled for September 4, 2023, and students are eager to engage in their studies and campus life.

Windsor’s move-in day not only represents a fresh start for students but also underscores the supportive community surrounding them. Families, volunteers, and university staff all played crucial roles in ensuring a smooth transition for the incoming students, setting a positive tone for the school year ahead.
