Calgary Pride Parade Celebrates 35 Years with Huge Turnout

UPDATE: The 35th Calgary Pride Parade took place on July 2, 2023, attracting massive crowds under sunny skies, marking a triumphant celebration amidst a challenging year for organizers.
This year’s event drew boisterous supporters who filled Ninth Avenue with cheers, signaling a powerful community response to ongoing adversity. Riley Sogge, co-chair of the Calgary Pride board, expressed overwhelming joy, stating, “I feel so elated. The crowd speaks for itself here.”
Despite facing setbacks such as funding shortfalls and anti-trans legislation, the enthusiasm of attendees highlighted the event’s significance. Sogge emphasized the importance of community support, declaring, “The support trumps everything… We have a responsibility to Calgary and the queer community.”
Following the parade, revelers moved to Prince’s Island Park for the free Pride Festival, which runs until 10 p.m. on Sunday. Sogge invited everyone to join, reinforcing that the festival is open to all, regardless of sexual orientation or identity. “We welcome everybody and hope to see you down there,” she urged.
With the beautiful weather and vibrant atmosphere, the Calgary Pride Parade not only celebrated its rich history but also galvanized support for the queer community in a time of adversity. As the day unfolds, the festival promises to be a gathering of unity and celebration in Calgary.
