Watsonairs Choir Kicks Off Fall Season with New Venue, Milestones

BREAKING: The Watsonairs Choir is set to launch its highly anticipated fall session on September 8, 2023, at 6:45 p.m. in their new rehearsal space at Messiah Lutheran Church. This significant transition marks the beginning of a milestone season as the choir gears up for its 70th anniversary and the annual Christmas Carol Festival.
Under the direction of Amy Robinson, who took the helm in 2023, the women’s choir has outgrown its previous home at the Margo Fournier Centre. “The pillars in the old space made it difficult for everyone to see me,” Robinson stated, highlighting the need for a more accommodating environment as the choir expands. The move to Messiah Lutheran Church, which welcomed the group, allows for more visibility and better practice conditions.
Founded in 1956, the Watsonairs have been an integral part of Prince Albert’s cultural landscape for almost seven decades. This fall is particularly special as the choir approaches its 70th birthday. The Christmas Carol Festival, a cherished community tradition that also serves as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army, is scheduled for December 4 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Robinson emphasized the festival’s importance, stating, “It’s a big fundraiser where we sing Christmas music and invite guest artists to join us.”
Rehearsals are open to all who love singing, with no auditions required. Currently, the Watsonairs choir comprises about 25 singers, and Robinson encourages new members to join. “Music is a discipline that’s good for the brain, the spirit, and the soul,” she said. “It brings joy, it keeps us positive, and it reminds us of the fun and innocence of the holidays in a world that can feel increasingly negative.”
In addition to the Christmas Carol Festival, the Watsonairs are planning a decades-themed spring concert at St. Joseph Parish to commemorate their anniversary year. For those interested in experiencing the choir, Robinson invites community members to attend a rehearsal. “Just come and join us,” she urged. “If people don’t want to stick around, they don’t have to, but at least they’ll get a feel for what it’s all about.”
This is a remarkable time for the Watsonairs Choir as they prepare to celebrate their rich history while welcoming new voices to their ensemble. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this vibrant community tradition!
