Nova Scotia Power Plans 2.1% Rate Hike Amid Controversy

UPDATE: Nova Scotia Power has just announced a proposed rate increase that is stirring controversy across the province. The utility plans to raise power rates by an average of 2.1% in 2026 and again in 2027, with residential customers facing an even steeper hike of 4.1% each year. This news is raising significant concerns among residents and officials alike.
Premier Tim Houston expressed his discontent, labeling the proposal as “out of touch” with the needs of Nova Scotians. In a statement released earlier today, he emphasized that this is not the right time for a rate increase, especially following one of the largest data breaches in the province’s history involving Nova Scotia Power. “We still feel betrayed by Nova Scotia Power. This is not the time for a rate increase. This is a time for Nova Scotia Power to show they understand Nova Scotians and withdraw or significantly reduce their application,” Houston stated.
The proposed increase, which is subject to approval by the Nova Scotia Energy Board (NSEB), is seen as a pressing issue for many households and businesses. According to Nova Scotia Power, the settlement was reached through discussions with various customer representatives, including the Consumer Advocate, Small Business Advocate, and several local commissions. These representatives collaborated with the utility to strike a balance between affordability and necessary investments in the power grid.
Nova Scotia Power defended the proposal, stating, “This settlement is the result of strong collaboration and engagement. We appreciate the time and effort that has gone into the discussions over the last several months.” However, the sentiment among residents suggests a growing frustration with rising costs.
The utility plans to submit its official rate application to the NSEB later this month, in September. As the situation develops, many are urging for transparency and reconsideration of the proposed hikes. Residents are encouraged to voice their opinions as public hearings will likely follow.
The emotional response from the community highlights the urgency of this issue. With many families already struggling with rising living costs, the prospect of higher electricity bills adds to their financial stress.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds. The implications of this proposed rate hike could affect thousands of residents across Nova Scotia, making it essential for the public to stay informed and engaged.
