The Duchess of Kent, known for her dedication to music and her compassionate gestures at sporting events, has passed away at the age of 92. Buckingham Palace confirmed her death on Friday, stating that she died at her home in Kensington Palace on Thursday.

Born on February 22, 1933, as Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley, the Duchess married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who was a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Over her lifetime, she became well-known for her warm presence at Wimbledon, where she often consoled defeated players. One of her most memorable moments came in 1993, when she embraced a tearful Jana Novotna after her loss to Steffi Graf in the women’s singles final.

The Duchess prioritized music education, stepping back from royal duties to teach music for over a decade at a public school in Hull, located in northeast England. A talented pianist, organist, and singer, she founded the charity Future Talent, aimed at providing instruments and opportunities for young musicians. Her commitment to education and the arts left an enduring impact on many.

In addition to her artistic contributions, the Duchess made history as the first royal to convert to Catholicism in over three centuries. She also volunteered with the suicide-prevention organization, Samaritans, demonstrating her empathy and dedication to helping others in need.

In a heartfelt statement, King Charles III and the royal family expressed their sorrow over her passing. They highlighted her “lifelong devotion to all the organizations with which she was associated, her passion for music, and her empathy for young people.” In tribute to her memory, the flag at Buckingham Palace was lowered to half-staff at noon.

The Duchess leaves behind her husband, Prince Edward, and three children: George, Earl of St. Andrews, Lady Helen Windsor, and Lord Nicholas Windsor. Her legacy will continue through her family and the many lives she touched during her remarkable life.
