A spirited atmosphere enveloped Coldstream’s Kalamalka Country Club as the Vernon Tennis Association hosted the inaugural Vernon Junior Tennis Tournament on September 2, 2023. This one-day event marked an exciting opportunity for young players aged six to fourteen, many of whom were participating in a tournament for the first time.

The tournament featured a total of 16 enthusiastic competitors, showcasing their skills across various age divisions. According to event spokesperson Gordon Mann, the goal was to provide a platform for novice players to experience the thrill of competitive tennis.

Amidst the friendly competition, medals were awarded in three categories. In the 10 and under division, Boston Leigh secured the gold medal, while Ben Engrram claimed the runner-up position. The 12 and under category saw Esmée Peterson take home the top prize, with Silas Kane finishing as the runner-up. Finally, Josh Cook emerged victorious in the 14 and under division, defeating Sony Nguyen, who placed second.

This tournament not only provided a competitive environment for the young players but also fostered community spirit among families and spectators. The event coincided with the lead-up to the Labour Day weekend, making it an ideal occasion for the community to come together and support local talent.
