A bike drive aimed at refurbishing and donating bicycles to children in need kicks off on Saturday in Edmonton. This initiative, organized by Sport Central, marks the third consecutive year of the event, which focuses on collecting bikes that may be rusting away in sheds across the city. The drive seeks to ensure that every child who desires a bicycle has access to one, particularly as warmer spring weather increases demand.

According to Janna Tominuk, CEO of Sport Central, the organization is committed to providing sports equipment to underserved youth in the area. “We really believe every kid deserves a bike,” she stated. Tominuk emphasized the importance of the bicycle drive, noting that when spring arrives, the charity typically has between 300 and 400 bikes available for distribution. “That inventory goes down pretty quickly,” she added. “The more inventory we have, the less kids wait.”

The bike drive will run every Saturday throughout September, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Residents can drop off bicycles in good condition or those that require moderate repairs at designated locations throughout the city. Fountain Tire, a tire dealer and automotive service shop, is collaborating with Sport Central, providing additional drop-off points for residents.

For individuals who may not have a bike to donate but still wish to support the cause, financial contributions are welcome. Donations will be used to purchase new bicycles, helmets, bells, and reflectors for children in need.

More details regarding drop-off locations and donation processes can be found on the Sport Central website. This initiative not only aims to reduce the number of bikes left unused but also fosters a sense of community by ensuring that children have the opportunity to enjoy cycling.
