Scarborough Park Renamed to Honor Late Councillor Cynthia Lai

A park in Scarborough has been officially renamed to honor the legacy of Cynthia Lai, a former city councillor who passed away in October 2022. The Toronto City Council announced the renaming of Rosebank Park, located at 1051 Progress Ave, to Cynthia Lai Park. This decision came on Saturday, reflecting the contributions Lai made during her tenure.
The city selected Rosebank Park with the support of Lai’s family, recognizing her dedication to local community initiatives. During her time in office, Lai was instrumental in promoting cleanup and maintenance efforts at various parks, including the one now bearing her name. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed the significance of this tribute, stating, “Cynthia Lai was a passionate champion for families and communities in Scarborough. Naming Cynthia Lai Park after her is a fitting tribute, as it will forever stand as a place where her mission of creating a better Scarborough and Toronto can be enjoyed by all.”
Park Features and Legacy
The newly named Cynthia Lai Park spans approximately 4.3 hectares and offers an open green space, horticultural displays, and basketball courts. These features provide an inviting environment for residents and visitors, emphasizing the community-oriented vision Lai championed throughout her career.
Lai represented Ward 23 Scarborough North and was known for her commitment to improving the lives of residents in her constituency. Tragically, she died at the age of 68 on October 21, 2022, after a prolonged illness. Her passing marked a significant loss for the community she served diligently.
The renaming of Rosebank Park is not just a commemoration of Lai’s work; it serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community. The park now stands as a testament to her dedication and the positive changes she sought to implement in Scarborough and beyond.
As local residents begin to enjoy the revamped park under its new name, the legacy of Cynthia Lai will continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that her vision for a vibrant and inclusive community remains alive.
