Joliet Superintendent Karla Guseman Wins Prestigious ATHENA Award

BREAKING NEWS: Joliet Township High School District 204 Superintendent Karla Guseman has just been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 ATHENA Award, a recognition that highlights exceptional leadership and community impact. Guseman will be honored during the 38th ATHENA luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on September 24 at the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate in Joliet.
The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry and its Council for Working Women announced this significant honor, celebrating Guseman’s dedication to promoting professional excellence and supporting women in leadership. The deadline to purchase tickets for this highly anticipated event is September 18, making it essential for those interested to act quickly.
Karla Guseman stands out as the “only female high school superintendent in her sports conference and one of only a handful in Will County.” Since her appointment in 2020, Guseman has dramatically transformed the leadership landscape within District 204, overseeing the hiring or promotion of 24 women into administrative roles. Notably, women now make up over 50% of the district’s administrative staff, with a significant number being women of color.
Under Guseman’s visionary leadership, District 204 has launched the Will County Economic Development Summer Internship Program, which connects students to invaluable paid work-based learning experiences. Additionally, she has spearheaded a comprehensive career and technical education program, allowing students to earn industry certifications in essential fields such as health care, culinary arts, and safety.
Guseman’s community involvement extends beyond education. She has held leadership roles with the Kiwanis Club of Joliet, the YMCA Metro Board, and various advisory councils, demonstrating her commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Joliet.
This recognition not only honors Guseman but also highlights the importance of women in leadership roles, inspiring others to pursue their potential.
