TTC Takes Control of Finch West LRT Operations, Opening Nears

UPDATE: The operations of the Finch West LRT have officially been transferred to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), marking a significant step towards the line’s long-awaited opening. This transition occurred over the weekend of October 14-15, 2023, as confirmed by Metrolinx, the provincial agency overseeing the construction and testing.
“This transfer is an important step forward and will enable TTC operators and drivers to continue testing and preparing the system for future passenger service,” a spokesperson for Metrolinx stated in a press release sent to Global News. This development brings the Finch West LRT one step closer to becoming operational for commuters in Toronto.
The Finch West LRT, designed to enhance public transportation in the area, now falls under the TTC’s control for running train testing. This critical transition mirrors the recent progress made by the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which also transferred operations to the TTC as it continued its journey towards opening.
Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay expressed optimism regarding the Finch West LRT’s timeline, stating on Friday that the project is progressing faster than the Eglinton Crosstown. He noted that while the Finch West may appear to be behind schedule on paper, it could potentially open at the same time as Eglinton. “I think it’s fair to say, love that system, but I think it’s a little more simplified,” Lindsay remarked. “It essentially runs in a dedicated right of way; the signalling technology has been proven, and the vehicles are a little more simplified.”
While this transfer signifies advancement, the TTC has cautioned that it does not guarantee an imminent opening date. In previous announcements regarding the Eglinton Crosstown, the TTC emphasized that the province would announce an opening date only when confident in the line’s readiness for safe operations.
The Finch West LRT will significantly impact local transit, promising to ease congestion and provide a reliable alternative for Toronto’s commuters. As the TTC prepares for further testing, residents and stakeholders are eager for updates on the timeline for passenger service.
Next Steps: Transit enthusiasts and daily commuters are urged to stay tuned for further announcements from Metrolinx and the TTC regarding specific opening dates and operational readiness. The anticipation surrounding the Finch West LRT is palpable, as it represents a vital enhancement to Toronto’s transit infrastructure.
