Muralist Revives Iconic Bears on Broadway in Winnipeg Effort

URGENT UPDATE: A muralist in Winnipeg is breathing new life into beloved concrete bears, a project that has significant sentimental value for the community. Rachel Lancaster has just completed the restoration of four iconic bears that were originally part of a fundraiser for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.

The bears, which were first displayed along Broadway two decades ago, now find themselves scattered across the province, showcasing vibrant artistry but in desperate need of care. Lancaster’s efforts come as she repaints these cherished figures, with the first restoration completed just days ago at Winpak Limited.

Lancaster stated, “The original first bear that I was asked to paint was a Blue Bomber bear. That bear was in rough condition.” She described the extensive repairs needed, including replacing crumbling concrete. The project, which began earlier this month, has already garnered significant attention on social media, drawing praise from the original artist of the Blue Bomber bear, Hubert Theroux.

Theroux’s daughter informed him of Lancaster’s work, leading to a heartfelt conversation between the two artists. “(My daughter) said, ‘Yeah, somebody restored your bears, it’s Rachel!’ … I said, ‘Wow, she did a good job,’” Theroux remarked. He expressed gratitude for the restoration, emphasizing the emotional connection these bears hold for the community.

Lancaster, reflecting on her journey, said, “To be honoured 20 years later, to have the abilities to do this for everyone … I just feel very honoured.” Her passion for these bears represents a nostalgic link to her youth when she admired them as a 16-year-old.
