Manteno Surges Past Wilmington in Thrilling 3-Set Volleyball Match
BREAKING: In a nail-biting showdown, the Manteno Panthers triumphed over the Wilmington Wildcats in a gripping three-set match on September 26, 2023. Manteno, now boasting a record of 9-3, 3-0 in the Illinois Central Eight Conference, secured the victory with a dramatic third set win, concluding at 27-25.
With both teams among the top contenders in the conference, this match was crucial. Manteno showcased their strength on the road, with standout performances from Olivia McElroy, who led the team with 11 kills, and Maddie Gesky, contributing 10 kills and three blocks. The Panthers’ defense was equally impressive, as Morgan Derrico recorded 20 digs and Danika Fletcher added 14 assists along with seven digs.
For Wilmington, who now stands at 7-2, 2-1, individual statistics were not available, but the team fought valiantly in front of their home crowd. This match marks a pivotal point in the season as both teams aim for the top of the standings.
IN OTHER ACTION: The girls’ volleyball scene was alive with more exciting matches. Cissna Park, with a record of 7-0, 1-0, continued their impressive form by defeating Salt Fork 2-0, extending their VVC winning streak to 27 games. Key players included Addison Lucht and Josie Neukomm, each contributing six kills.
Donovan also made headlines, handing St. Anne their first loss of the season with a 2-0 victory. The Wildcats, now 6-3, 2-0, were led by Layne Hefflefinger with seven kills.
In a tightly contested battle, Beecher edged out Grant Park 2-1, while Gardner-South Wilmington snapped a losing streak with a 2-1 win over Clifton Central.
On the boys’ soccer field, Beecher maintained their momentum with a 2-1 victory over Grant Park, keeping their unbeaten River Valley Conference status intact. Meanwhile, St. Anne dominated Illinois Lutheran with a staggering 9-0 win, highlighted by four goals from Brigham Hays.
In boys’ golf, Lincoln-Way Central triumphed over Bradley-Bourbonnais with a score of 158-170, while Streator defeated Coal City 155-174, despite Coal City posting a season-best score.
As the season progresses, fans and teams alike are eagerly watching the standings shift. The intensity of competition is palpable, with players and coaches preparing for the next challenges ahead.
