An international activist flotilla attempting to breach the Israeli blockade of Gaza reported being attacked for the second consecutive night in Tunisian waters. The Global Sumud Flotilla stated that one of its vessels, the British-flagged “Alma,” was struck by a drone while docked, but no injuries occurred among the crew.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday when security camera footage shared by the flotilla depicted crew members shouting “fire” and pointing towards the sky as flaming projectiles struck the boat, igniting a fire on the deck. This attack mirrored an earlier assault on the Portuguese-flagged “Family” vessel the night before. Tunisian authorities, however, denied claims that drones were responsible for the initial attack and announced that an investigation was underway.

Background of the Flotilla’s Mission

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprising around 20 boats, set sail from the port city of Barcelona, Spain, on September 1, carrying a symbolic shipment of humanitarian aid. The flotilla had intended to make a stop in Tunisia before proceeding to Gaza. Activists involved in the mission characterized the repeated attacks as part of a broader campaign to disrupt their efforts. They stated, “These repeat attacks come during intensified Israeli aggression on Palestinians in Gaza, and are an orchestrated attempt to distract and derail our mission.”

While the flotilla remains undeterred, there has been no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the recent incidents. The activists continue to emphasize their commitment to delivering aid and raising awareness about the ongoing situation in Gaza. As tensions escalate, the flotilla’s journey underscores the complexities surrounding humanitarian efforts in conflict zones.

The situation remains fluid as the investigation by Tunisian authorities unfolds, and the flotilla prepares to resume its mission amidst ongoing threats.
